The Program

Schools Reinventing Counties.

A statewide community design program built in Minecraft Education. Students explore their county, investigate a real local challenge, design a solution, and pitch it to the leaders who can act on it.

Students collaborating on a civic design project

The program that turns civics into action.

Schools Reinventing Counties sets classroom learning next to a live community problem. Students investigate that problem, build a solution, and pitch it to the people in charge, which is a long way from reading a chapter about local government.

The program rests on one principle: a specific place, a specific problem, and an audience who will actually turn up produce better student work than an open prompt. When students know their ideas can reach the people actually making decisions, they stop playing and start advocating.

The World

A Minecraft world built around your students' own county rather than a generic environment

The Challenge

A real community challenge, not a fictional scenario

The Pitch

A live pitch to local leaders who are in the room to listen as much as to judge

Standards

Standards-aligned across multiple subject areas

From arrival to advocacy.

Every team follows the same design process. Understanding comes before designing.

01

Explore

Observe the community before attempting to improve it.

02

Listen

Meet guides, local leaders, historians, and subject matter experts.

03

Investigate

Ask questions to understand how history, geography, and culture shape the place.

04

Understand

Connect what you've learned and identify the problems worth solving.

05

Imagine

Brainstorm possibilities before committing to a direction.

06

Design

Create a solution grounded in what the community actually needs.

07

Build

Bring the idea to life in Minecraft with purposeful features that work together.

08

Share

Record a Virtual Tour (MP4, 3 minutes or less) and enter Battle of the Counties, the optional competition.

Community-based learning in practice.

Students learn through the people, places, and challenges of a real community. Here is what that approach looks like across three disciplines that rarely share a classroom.

Pillar 01

STEM & Digital Literacy

Spatial reasoning, coding logic, and engineering design, all inside a game students already know how to use. The build has to work for real people, so they think like engineers whether or not they realize it.

Pillar 02

Civic Engagement

Students study how local government works by running into it. The challenges are real, the tradeoffs are real, and the audience at the end can act on what it hears.

Pillar 03

Academic Esports

Real-time collaboration, consensus-building and high-stakes presentation, inside a competitive format students actually want to win.

Built for your county.

Every participating county gets a custom Minecraft Education world grounded in real local geography, landmarks, and community life. The world arrives ready to explore, with nothing for your staff to build.

What's inside every world
  • The California State Capitol, where students start and choose a county pathway
  • County-specific landmarks, neighborhoods, and civic spaces
  • NPCs representing real community voices: leaders, historians, scientists, and experts
  • A Community Design Mentor who presents the Design Challenge
  • A designated build zone for student solutions
How the world is made
  • Built by Lifeboat Studios, with no work required from school staff
  • Grounded in real county geography, history, and community priorities
  • Runs on Minecraft Education, with licensing coordinated through your county office of education

"This is not about playing a game. It is about student voice, civic engagement, and showing our students that their ideas can lead real change."

Dr. Stefan Bean, Orange County Superintendent of Schools

Why this model works.

Each piece does a job. The place makes the work personal, the problem makes it real, and the audience makes it matter.

Students who know their ideas can reach the people actually making decisions don't treat the work as schoolwork. They treat it as a platform. The build gets more detailed. The research gets more thorough. The pitch gets rehearsed.

Place

Their county, their community, their neighbors, rather than a fictional scenario

Problem

Ocean reefs, community schools, city planning, local government, mental wellness, local history: real problems with no tidy answer

Audience

Local leaders who are in the room to listen as much as to judge

Ready to bring this to your students?

Any California school can register now. Schools in participating counties work in their own county's world, and everyone else enters through the Catalina Island Open Pathway. The worlds come built and training is provided. You bring the students.
